Why I built Recover.md

AI coding tools are incredibly powerful, but they can also modify or delete large amounts of information in seconds.

Recover.md started after I realized how easy it was to lose valuable Markdown notes and context while working with AI.

I built Recover.md as a free safety net for anyone working this way. No subscriptions. No cloud storage. No business model around your data. Just a small tool designed to make AI-assisted work safer.

Recover.md is version history, not a backup.

Recover.md adds an additional recovery layer on the same computer. Keep using your normal backup, sync, or source-control system for important information. It does not guarantee that every file change can be captured or recovered—especially edits made while the app is not running.

What does Recover.md do?

Recover.md is a free Windows desktop app that automatically keeps local versions of your Markdown files. When a file changes—whether you edited it or an AI tool did—you can browse history, compare versions, search old text, and restore a previous state.

Does Recover.md work with Claude Code?

Yes. Recover.md watches Markdown files on disk. It does not integrate with Claude Code specifically; it works at the filesystem layer, so changes Claude Code writes to `.md` files are captured while Recover.md is running.

Does Recover.md work with Cursor?

Yes. Same idea: Cursor (or any editor/agent) that saves Markdown files to a watched folder is covered. Recover.md does not require a Cursor plugin.

Does Recover.md work with Obsidian?

Yes. Point Recover.md at your vault folder. It can run alongside Obsidian Sync or other tools as an independent local history layer. It does not replace sync.

Is Recover.md a replacement for Git?

No. Recover.md is automatic local history for everyday Markdown work—notes, prompts, and docs—without commits or repositories. Keep Git for projects that need it.

Is Recover.md a backup?

No. It is version history on the same computer, not a backup, sync, or off-site copy. Keep using your normal backup, sync, or source-control system for important information. Recover.md does not guarantee that every change can be recovered.

Does Recover.md upload my files?

No. The desktop app stores history locally and is designed to make no network requests of its own. Your Markdown contents are not uploaded to create version history.

Does the desktop app require an account?

No. There is no sign-in and no cloud account for the Windows app.

Which operating systems are supported?

The current MVP is available for Windows. Other platforms are not offered as a supported public download yet.

Where does Recover.md store version history?

On Windows, history lives under `%APPDATA%\Recover.MD` (a local SQLite database and related files)—not inside your Markdown folder. Historical content in this version is not encrypted; protection depends on your OS account and disk encryption.

How do I uninstall Recover.md and remove its stored history?

Uninstall Recover.md from Windows Apps & features (or the installer uninstall). To remove stored history, delete the `%APPDATA%\Recover.MD` folder after quitting the app. Uninstalling the app does not automatically delete that folder.
